This alternative psychotherapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, helps mood disorders and emotional health. Here's how tapping and affirmations can change depressed feelings.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can change the body’s energy field with acupressure or when acupuncture points are tapped. This disrupts negative or “stuck” thought patterns and can lead to more positive energy. EFT stabilizes many emotional health issues and mood disorders, and can effectively treat feelings of depression.

How Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Works

EFT is an alternative or non-conventional type of psychotherapy that changes the body or "bodymind’s" energy field and alleviates psychological problems. Specifically, tapping on acupressure points while saying positive affirmations can distract people from negative thought patterns and depressed feelings. Instead of spiraling downward into depression, they interrupt their thought patterns and change their energy.

The Emotional Freedom Technique is a natural or organic way people can get help for emotional health problems or psychological disorders.

Emotional Freedom Technique for Depression

“By tapping acupressure points while saying affirmations, the Emotional Freedom Technique and tapping repairs the electrical interrupts in the bodymind and can release old (bad) patterns the energy of the bodymind has become stuck in,” says Yukon-based EFT practitioner Susan Gwynne-Timothy, who is also a Reiki Master.

One of Gwynne-Timothy’s clients is a 40-year-old woman who struggled with depression for 20 years. Traditional psychology (cognitive-behavioral therapy, counseling, antidepressants, etc) didn’t help.

“She started doing the Emotional Freedom Technique, and two months later was far more cheerful and positive than I have ever known her to be,” says Gwynne-Timothy. “She credits doing the tapping regularly on the many difficult emotions and memories as they occur.” For instance, she taps to move forward from being trapped in the downward spiral these emotions cause, and it improves her mood and helps lift the depression.

Also, EFT helps people help themselves, and doesn’t rely on psychologists, counselors, or medication to provide help with depression. “Instead of receiving treatment from others, my client has a sense of self-empowerment because she does the tapping and says the affirmations herself,” says Gwynne-Timothy. “I think this made a big difference for her.”

Other psychological problems or emotional health issues that Emotional Freedom Technique can help includes post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, obsessive compulsive tendencies, and eating disorders.
